Try this and you will soon discover that you are on a different state of awareness.
Look straight into the horizon. From the level of the horizon lift your eyes just a wee bit. And stay there. In a little while you will begin to notice the whole area that surrounds you including the sky just above you, the place you are standing, either sides of you. Maintain this look for a few seconds, you will even begin to feel the background behind you.
You will feel relaxed and attentive very soon.
*I learnt this during a short stay in a Zen- Christian hermitage in Japan. According to the master there ( Rev Fr Oshida) this is a skill martial artists have to perfect. Accomplished martial artists stay in this mode so that they not only see the movements in the front and on either sides but become sensitive to any movements in the behind as well.
